Specific expense notes

Groceries

Israeli supermarkets in 2026:

- Shufersal Deal, Mega B'Ir, Rami Levy, Yenot Bitan. Major chains. Comparable prices.

- Osher Ad, Hetzi Hinam. Discount chains. 20 to 30 percent cheaper.

- Tiv Ta'am, Shuk HaCarmel direct shops. Specialty and Anglo products. More expensive.

A family of 4 grocery bill in 2026: roughly NIS 4,500 per month at Shufersal, NIS 3,200 per month at Osher Ad. Anglo specialty products (peanut butter, cereal, ranch dressing) cost 30 to 80 percent more than US prices.

Dining out

- Pita falafel: NIS 25 to NIS 35

- Coffee shop coffee + pastry: NIS 30 to NIS 45

- Casual sit-down restaurant meal: NIS 80 to NIS 130 per person

- Mid-range restaurant: NIS 150 to NIS 250 per person

- High-end restaurant: NIS 350 to NIS 700 per person

Transit

The Rav-Kav unlimited monthly pass is NIS 225 for full national use, NIS 140 to NIS 215 for regional. Buses, trains, and light rail all included.

Owning a car in Israel typically costs NIS 2,500 to NIS 4,500 per month all-in (depreciation, insurance, fuel, parking, maintenance) for a modest vehicle.

Health

Even before private supplemental, every adult pays Bituach Leumi (health tax included) of about 3 to 6 percent of income.

On top:

- Mashlim Kupah: NIS 30 to NIS 70 per adult per month

- Private supplemental: NIS 100 to NIS 250 per adult per month

- Dental (separate): NIS 30 to NIS 100 per adult per month

Schools

Public school is free from age 3 (Gan Hova) through 12th grade. Private schools (Beit Sefer Prati or international) range from NIS 25,000 to NIS 80,000 per year per child.

Pre-school daycare (Ma'on or Tzaharon) for ages 4 months to 3 years: NIS 1,500 to NIS 4,500 per month per child. Government subsidies (Subsidiyat Ma'on) can reduce this for qualifying families.

After-school programs (Chugim, sports clubs, music lessons): NIS 200 to NIS 800 per child per Chug per month.

Sal Klita and Misrad Haklita payments

New Olim receive Sal Klita absorption payments over the first 6 months:

- Single Oleh: total around NIS 10,500 to NIS 12,000 plus rental subsidy

- Couple: total around NIS 18,000 to NIS 22,000

- Family of 4: total around NIS 28,000 to NIS 35,000

- Rental subsidy: NIS 1,000 to NIS 2,500 per month for 6 months depending on family size

Plus one-time grants:

- Furnishings (Hashlamat Ricoosh): NIS 5,000 to NIS 8,000

- Cash on arrival (Mizen Klita): NIS 1,500 to NIS 3,000 per adult

Sal Klita totals NIS 15,000 to NIS 60,000 across the 6 months depending on family size. Useful but not enough to live on by itself in central cities.

How much savings to bring

For a single adult covering 12 months in Tel Aviv:

- 12 months x NIS 15,000 = NIS 180,000 (about USD 47,000)

- Plus security deposit (3 months rent) and first month: NIS 30,000+

- Plus initial setup costs (furniture, appliances, deposits): NIS 25,000 to NIS 50,000

- Total: NIS 235,000 to NIS 260,000 = USD 60,000 to USD 70,000

For a family of 4 covering 12 months in Jerusalem:

- 12 x NIS 25,000 = NIS 300,000

- Plus deposits and setup: NIS 60,000

- Plus possible home purchase down payment if planning to buy in year 2 to 3: NIS 700,000+

- Total: NIS 1,000,000+ if including down payment, USD 260,000+

Common mistakes Olim make

Budgeting Tel Aviv rents and then realizing the rest of the budget breaks. Many Olim move to Modi'in, Ra'anana, Givatayim, or Petach Tikva in year 2.

Underestimating Arnona. Tel Aviv central can be NIS 700 to NIS 1,500 per month. Periphery is NIS 200 to NIS 500.

Assuming Sal Klita covers more than it does. Plan for living costs independent of Sal Klita.

Skipping a car when one is needed. Modi'in, Ra'anana, Yokne'am, Givatayim, and most periphery cities are difficult without a car. Budget NIS 2,500 to NIS 4,000 monthly.

Buying Israeli-priced consumer goods. Bring 2 to 3 years of clothing, electronics, kitchen items from the US or UK. Israeli prices on these are 30 to 80 percent higher.

What to do before aliyah

1. Pick a target city. Confirm it matches your salary level.

2. Run a realistic 12-month budget for that city.

3. Save 12 to 18 months of expenses in addition to any planned home purchase down payment.

4. Visit Israel for at least 2 weeks to see actual prices in person.

5. Set up Israeli bank account access before arrival if your bank allows.

שאלות נפוצות

How much do new Olim need to live in Israel comfortably in 2026?

For a single adult: NIS 9,000 to NIS 14,000 per month in central Tel Aviv, NIS 7,000 to NIS 10,000 in Jerusalem or Haifa, NIS 5,500 to NIS 8,000 in periphery cities. For a family of 4: NIS 22,000 to NIS 35,000 in Tel Aviv, NIS 16,000 to NIS 26,000 elsewhere.

Is Israel more expensive than the US or UK?

Tel Aviv is comparable to expensive US coastal cities (San Francisco, Boston) or central London. Jerusalem and Haifa run about 20 to 30 percent cheaper than Tel Aviv. Periphery cities (Be'er Sheva, Ashkelon, Karmiel) are 30 to 50 percent cheaper than Tel Aviv. Food and consumer goods are generally pricier in Israel than the US or UK on a like-for-like basis.

How much does Sal Klita cover?

Sal Klita absorption payments for a single adult Oleh total roughly NIS 11,000 over the first 6 months, plus rental assistance of NIS 1,000 to NIS 2,500 per month for 6 months. For families, total payments can exceed NIS 60,000. Useful to bridge the first months but rarely sufficient to live on without other income.
